Where is the origin of the yuju tree?

The scientific name of the Yuju tree is "Fortunella Japonica var. margarita". This tree is known to be a hybrid of the tangerine tree, which originated in China, and the citron tree, which is widely distributed in Jeju Island, South Korea. It is currently cultivated all over the world, and is one of the most popular fruit trees, especially in the United States, Australia, and Japan. In Korea, it is cultivated in Gyeongnam and Jeju Island. It has small-cute fruits, strong-thick green leaves, and beautiful white flowers with a citrus scent, making it a very popular ornamental plant.

Are the fruits of the Yuju tree edible?

The Yuju tree produces small fruits about 2 to 4 cm in diameter. The flesh is thick and you can eat both the skin and the kernels. The skin changes from green to yellow, and the flesh has many seeds and has a moderate sourness and sweetness. I picked a fruit in late fall last year (2022) and ate it, and it had a sour taste that made my mouth water. It was suitable to eat. Yuju tree is rich in vitamin C, potassium, and dietary fiber. In particular, it is said to be effective in strengthening immunity due to its high vitamin C content. In addition, it is said that the Yuju tree has antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as effects such as improving digestive function, controlling blood pressure, and controlling blood sugar. It is a very beneficial plant.

How to care for Yuju tree

In the southern region of Korea, overwintering is possible even in the open field during the winter. Apparently, this tree prefers outdoors rather than indoors. So, it is best to grow it in an open space such as a terrace with plenty of sunlight, at least from spring to summer. Of course, it can grow well indoors in the living room, so it doesn't matter where you place it as long as it isn't too dark. When growing indoors, it is best to maintain the temperature above 20 degrees and use lamps to support photosynthesis to produce good fruit.

In early spring, white flower buds emerge from the tips of the stems of the Yuju tree, and soon the fragrant flowers bloom in full bloom. The flower usually lasts for about a month, and as the center of the flower slowly rises like a convex fruit bud, the petals turn yellow and fall off. Not all flowers turn into fruits, but usually about 70% of them successfully grow into fruits. This is a time when the tree uses a lot of energy, so it is a good idea to maintain its energy by watering or applying liquid fertilizer appropriately. It is recommended to observe closely and avoid applying fertilizer as much as possible after applying fertilizer in April to May. As summer passes and fall progresses, the acorn-like green fruit gradually changes into a round shape, and as fall passes and winter approaches, this green fruit turns into a very cute golden orange color.

How to consume Yuju fruit?

Because it is not sweet overall and has a slightly bitter taste, it is used in various dishes and drinks. In particular, it is good to eat the peel together, and it is mainly used in salads, sauces, champagne, cocktails, etc. In addition, due to the nature of the eucalyptus tree, which has many seeds, it is often used in various dishes or drinks rather than eaten directly. In particular, it is good to eat with salads or sushi, and can also be used as a garnish for champagne or cocktails.
