Beauty and the Beast in a glass dome...!

 You may have seen a pretty object that depicts a fantasy scene inside a glass dome with twinkling lights. This exquisitely crafted object becomes even more beautiful when paired with beautiful floral materials that are preserved fresh flowers, called preserved flowers. In particular, a handmade piece depicting a scene from the Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast seems to have unique value. Today I will tell you about the creation of these objects.

What is preserved?

 First of all, let's talk about preserved flowers. They are a special product that preserves fresh flowers using a preservative solution when they are at their most beautiful bloom. It was popular in Japan and a lot of it was produced, and the quality of the products made in Japan is considered to be the best. Recently, Colombian products are on the rise, and although they are not as good as Japanese products, they are competing in the market with their own level of sophistication. Of course, many Chinese products are distributed, but the quality of the products is very low and there are various risks.

 

 In the case of Japanese products, each petal is separated, preserved, and then reassembled, resulting in very realistic colors and excellent texture. There is less concern about color transfer, the color lasts longer, and it is less likely to become cloudy. Colombian products are manufactured and delivered to Colombia by a Japanese company as OEM. Although they are not as good as the original Japanese products, they show their own high quality, making them a good choice as a replacement for expensive Japanese products. Japanese-made roses cost about 50,000 won for a bunch of small roses, so they can be said to be more expensive than fresh flowers.

 On the other hand, Chinese products focus on mass production, so the quality is very poor. They are dyed as a whole rather than separated and preserved individually, so even the calyxes are dyed the same color. So it lacks realism and feels very artificial. Also, the color transfer is good, so after designing, it can dye the color of other flowers placed next to it, and if you receive it as a gift and hold it, you may end up with an accident where the color transfers to your clothes, so you have to be very careful. The price is attractive (they say the price has increased recently...), but it has the disadvantage of being high risk. However, Hydrangea Preserved shows a certain level of quality, so Chinese Hydrangea Preserved is widely used.

 If you combine a famous figure or a fairytale-like figure with this preserved painting, a scene from a unique story will be created. In particular, if it is expressed in a glass dome, it can be preserved for a long time and can also be a gift that can be remembered for a long time. One time, a regular customer brought in his own Beauty and the Beast figurine and asked us to make a glass dome. I remember that it took about a week to create the work from conception to design. We created a scene where Beauty and the Beast dance together using the rose motif from the movie, and they were very satisfied.

 When producing such works, it is important to plan how to arrange them and what scenes to create. Since there is not a lot of space, the important points are how to harmonize the objects to be placed and the space, the supports used to secure them and the materials to cover them, and how to arrange the colors.

How do I secure it inside the glass dome?

 Glass domes can be easily purchased at most flower supply stores. There are types with and without LED lights, and they come in various sizes and shapes, so you can think about what kind of work you want to make and then choose the most appropriate shape. Personally, I used Printemps a lot, and it had the advantage of being able to get glass domes of various shapes at a low price.

 In the case of figures, they are attached to the bottom of the glass dome using woodworking glue. Since the bottom plate of the glass dome is mostly made of wood, it is easy to use wood glue. Rather than applying the glue and attaching it right away, attaching it about 1 to 2 minutes after applying it is a way to secure it firmly.

  In the case of preserved shoes, it is almost impossible to fix them individually. Therefore, floral foam or urethane foam is used. Floral foam is good for stability, but it has the disadvantage of easily splitting or collapsing, so urethane foam is usually cut. It is easy to first attach urethane foam using woodworking glue and then place the preserved shoes, but as your skills increase, you will choose to place separately designed preserved shoes on the urethane foam and then attach them. Because that way, preserved flowers can be placed in more detail.

  Once placement is complete, the most difficult task remains. This is the task of covering the glass dome, and the most important issue when covering it is whether the work is arranged within the expected range. In particular, the height needs to be adjusted well, but if you are too greedy and use a lot of preserved shoes, it will give the impression of being trapped and end up being a failed work of art that is more frustrating than comfortable.

 If it is properly placed, you must carefully cover the glass dome, using long tweezers to adjust the placement of the objects inside to ensure they are placed as planned.
